Months back I bought a copy of "E.B. White and the Story of Charlotte's Web," and have been slowly working my way through its pages. It's a sweet, kind of standard biographical treatment of the guy who gave us the first book I remember crying over.

I love gouache, but -- like onions and yoga -- gouache doesn't like me.

Many artists through the ages have used this opaque watercolor to terrific effect. One of my favorites is Maira Kalman, whose quirkilicious illustrations you've seen on the cover of the New Yorker and, perhaps, in her own books.

Two things about art college that are different from regular college:
1) You don't spend astronomical amounts of money on books. (Corollary: You DO spend astronomical amounts of money on art supplies.)
2) No one gets mad if you're doodling in class, and many, many people doodle -- or just outright draw in their sketchbooks -- while teachers are lecturing. 

Why is this OK? Inside the book you can see that I stitched the pages in. What you can't see, but happens to be true, is that I used medical sutures to sew them. The paper lining the inside of the book is something I made on Photoshop.

In describing the keys to becoming better at drawing, especially drawing from life, one of my illustration teachers often falls back on the phrase, "You have to become more sensitive. "

I love that reminder. However sensitive we think we are, we can be more so, improving what we notice so as to represent it on the page.

In some circles, they believe that one outgrows the coloring book at around age 8.
As you can see here, my college sophomore doesn't run in those circles. 
It's one of the reasons I love her.

There's definitely something calming about all those waiting outlines and a box of crayons, isn't there?

Doing our Tour of Endless Vacation Gift Emporiums last week in Cape Cod, Carlo said to me, "Did you see Stuart Little in the case?"

It would. But I never do, because our trips are often just a day and a half, and  the purpose is to spend time with family I don't see often enough.

A little while back I visited Huntington Park so I could do these pages here for Ohio Authority.

While there, I stopped at the nature center where I watched while a bully turtle kept knocking its smaller habitat-mate onto his back. Anyway, this is the lesser turtle. Here is my insight of the week, friends: 
When it comes to self-discipline, who we are with our dogs is who we are with ourselves. 

Do we struggle mightily to cut back the kibble when Fuzz is looking a bit plump, or do our best intentions fold in the presence of the treat-loving beast?

On our way to Columbus Saturday for Carlo's high school reunion, we stopped for lunch at the Bob Evans in Mansfield, Ohio. If you've ever driven from Cleveland to Columbus, odds are good you've stopped to refuel at this very spot. In some ways it's the most middle of middle America. The zone that one gets into, when one is a sketching sort, tends to seal in memories of whatever was going on during the drawing session. 

For instance, during the drawing of the table and chairs and umbrella above, I found out that someone who had borrowed my camera inadvertantly erased a bunch of photos I hadn't downloaded yet. I am helpless in the face of a new book about sketching. 
Never mind that there's very little that the writers of these books can say that I haven't read elsewhere or learned on my own. And still, I buy books such as Hannah Hinchman's "A Life In Hand," which is now pretty old but pretty wonderful. No. I made up the corn pad. 

And actually, the text on the page here is an abbreviation of the story. The first time I saw my naked neighbor was about two weeks ago.
